DEADLY PURSUITS

An electric force sways me to look over my right shoulder. A handsome man in a tailored charcoal three-piece suit with short black hair, studies me. A smile races across my face at the wicked fantasy of him above me, beneath the sheets on my king-sized bed while he rocks my world. I wink at him and continue towards the elevator, pressing the button for the level of my penthouse.

“Wait!” a deep, commanding English voice shouts.

I quickly press the button to stop the elevator doors from closing. The atmosphere sizzles and my mouth drops slightly open when I find myself immersed deep inside the dark blue irises of the same man striding into the elevator. His presence leaves me gasping for air as the doors slide closed. The heat simmers within the elevator, making my nipples swell and press against my tight sports top.

I feel a sense of excitement as the handsome man smiles at me, carefully checking me out while he leans over to press the button for his level. The warmth of his touch brushes my bare shoulder and sends an electric current through me, making my stomach flip. He is the first man in a long time to raise awareness through my body.

He extends his hand to greet me. “Hello, my name is Charlton Brooks.”

My pulse quickens from the firm grip of his hand.

“Hello, Charlton. My name is Elise Fitzgerald,” I whisper as he releases his grip.

“Are you here for business or pleasure, Ms. Fitzgerald?”

Oh God!

I love the way the word pleasure rolls off his tongue.

“Business,” I murmur.

The elevator doors open to the level below mine. His smile is enough to liquify me into a puddle on the elevator floor when he leaves. I’m sure it’s the three-day dark growth of stubble. It’s provocative. I bet a lot of women swoon over him.

“It was a pleasure to meet you, Ms. Fitzgerald. I hope to see you again.”

“Maybe you will, Mr. Brooks.”

He winks while the warmth I had before rises fast on my cheekbones from his feverish gaze, remaining on me until the elevator doors close.

I place my palm on my chest, feeling my heart beat fast for this man.

Geezus! That’s an experience I won’t forget.

My eyes close for a second, inhaling rapid breaths and slowly releasing the air out of my mouth to bring my heart rate down. I’m intrigued by him. His touch and the tone of command in his voice warmed me all over. Lachlan, my ex-fiancé, was similar. But I can’t allow my heart to be torn again.

I love this spot; that’s what is great about the bay. There is an area where there aren’t many waves, and it is perfect for just swimming or snorkeling. Especially in the beach's mouth where there are rocks. While on the other side of the sand behind me, you can surf. I’m soaking in the salty air, closing my eyes as I feel Brad’s presence beside me when the white water comes tumbling in from the ocean, splashing on my feet.

“Shit!” he exclaims. “I forgot how cold it can be.” I cannot help but laugh at him. I’m not surprised he is cold too. He is wearing his Billabong gray board shorts and a white T-shirt along with his hat. “Come on.” He drags me in further by the hand, and I stride to keep up with him, otherwise I will fall flat on my face in the water. The water hits my shorts the more we move.

“Brad, it’s freezing, and we are going to get wet,” I yell out.

He comes to a stop; we are now knee-deep. The wind blows the long strands of my hair into my face. I wish I tied it up before we came down here. “Where’s your sense of fun, Evelyn? A little bit of cold water won’t hurt you.” He smiles and before I can run, he water bombs me, and a shudder races through my body when the icy water hits.

“Not when it’s freezing cold,” I disagree, but I end up laughing more than I care to admit. I’m enjoying this. I bend down to shovel the water with my hands in his direction. But I am water bombed by another one. I move away so he doesn’t get another go and I can prepare to bomb him.

Bullseye.

I throw my hands up in victory when I do. Laughter, they say, is the best medicine, and I am getting a good dose of it. I try to run after I get Brad once more in the chest, but he successfully gets me. Pure adrenaline is rushing through my veins, and I rest my hands on my bent knees to take a breather. I hope we do more of this while I stay with him because it was so much fun.

When I stand tall, I notice my shirt and short jeans are completely drenched. I stretch out the shirt to stop it from clinging to me as I stand back up. I notice Brad is quiet, and when I look, he is staring at me with his hands on his hips.

I wonder what he is thinking.

But I’m too preoccupied, checking out his soaked shirt that molds to every curve of the muscles on his firm chest. I don’t even feel cold anymore, even though my hard nipples tingle against my wet T-shirt. I pull on the shirt once more, so it doesn’t stick, just as he moves close to me. I crane my head back to gaze up at him while he brings his hands up to hold my face. Every part of me shivers because it feels like he is going to kiss me. His mouth is so close to mine as his thumb runs along my chin. It’s the second time today that I felt the attraction simmer between us. Brad darts his dark brown eyes back to me and wanders down to my mouth.

I hold my breath and close my eyes, expecting his lips to touch mine, but instead his warmth is gone, and I open my eyes to find Brad has stepped back, running his hand through the top of his hair.

“I really enjoyed this late afternoon, Evelyn,” he shares before giving me a big smile.
